Medical History of Iran
The beginning of the medical history in Iran is from the era when Pats lived in their first homeland near Khwarazm and the first Aryan physician was named “Treata”. Various Pahlavi books indicate that “Treata” did surgery too. He was also aware of medicinal properties of different plants and herbs and he prepared their extracts himself. After Treata, in Aryaviz area, in a place named “Verimakert”, an Aryan doctor called “Yama” managed to distinguish a group of skin, bone, dental patients and many others from healthy people. Like Treata, the name of Yama can be seen in Hindu books. Apparently Hippocrates was the first one who presented the medicine regularly and formally in the history and separated it from spells and magic (460-355 BC). After him, Galenus (AD 129-199) established a new school of anatomy and his works was a reference for naturalists for over a thousand years. In the 4th century, people and even physicians leaved gradually the methods established by Hippocrates and Galenus and they resorted to magic and spells to cure diseases and left behind the methods of Hippocrates and Galenus for years. It was in the wars between Iran and Greece that the Iranians got the medical works of Hippocrates and other Greek physicians and used them. Also after Islam, by the translation of Greek medical books, great Muslim scholars emerged such as Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi and Ibn Sina. Rapid scientific advances of the Muslims were a surprise for the world in such a way that anyone interested in knowledge travelled to the Muslims’ lands. In Pre-Renaissance period that Europe was ruled by the church, Europeans did anything with religious and superstitious motivations derived from Christianity to such an extent that for curing diseases they just did Healing Prayers. When Christians conquered Muslims’ cities such as al-Quds (Jerusalem), they were surprised by the science, technology and civilization of the Muslims. These events were a base for "Renaissance Revolution" in Europe. During the Renaissance, Muslim scholars’ books were translated into European languages and it made European progress. It is said that in the field of medicine, after the Bible, "The Canon of Medicine” written by Ibn Sina, was the most popular book in Europe and Ibn Sina’s medicine was taught in Europe for years. It was in this time that Muslims suffered civil wars and were ruled by incompetent rulers and colonial policies of European governments and they gradually stayed away from sciences.
Thanks to Mirza Taghi Khan Amir Kabir, the first modern medical center was founded in 1851as a part of Dar ul-Funun School. Austrian Jakob Eduard Polak as an instructor of philosophy, medicine, and surgery, and Italian Focckette as an instructor of natural sciences and pharmacy were employed in Dar ul-Funun. Polak was the founder and first person who did many modern medical practices in Iran; e.g. the first modern operation in December 1852 in which Focckette used ether for anesthesia for the first time, or anatomy of a Dar ul-Funun deceased teacher which is considered to be the first instance of forensic studies in Iran too. Then, several students were sent to France to complete their education, but the first person who took a doctorate in Iran was Khalil Khan (Alam Aldoleh) Saghafi, graduated in 1926. At the 70th anniversary of foundation of Dar ul-Funun, the medicine and pharmacy branches were separated and went on as the “school of medicine and pharmacy”. The school was in Dar ul-Funun until 1924 and then moved to one of Masoudieh Building’s yards. In 1939, a well-known pathologist, Professor Charles Oberling, became the dean of the College of Medicine. After him, Amir Alam and Javad Ashtiani became the dean of the college respectively. In 1934, it was required to study for 5 years to complete the medical course. This period was extended to 6 years in 1936 and, with one year internship, extended to 7 years in 1957-58 and has remained unchanged until now. In 1956, Schools of Dentistry and Pharmacy became independent. In 1961, four fields of study, namely medicine, surgery, gynecology and midwifery, were determined for the college. In later years, other colleges and educational institutions were founded in other Iranian cities.
